Roots Program

Have you always been told that you’re Metis by one relative or another? When you learn about Metis history, does it sound more like family stories you’ve heard before? Have you ever wondered how to find out more? Our Roots Program can help. With extensive resources in Metis Genealogy and family tree building software, we can help you make the connections, through your Ancestors, to your culture.

What to Expect

The Metis Community Services Roots Practitioners also assist children who are in the care of the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD). Many of these children and youth have no knowledge of their culture and the communities they come from. The Roots workers assist social workers in identifying Metis heritage, developing Cultural Plans to ensure Metis culture is part of their life and attending family group and decision-making circles to ensure all voices are heard.

Our Roots practitioners will require as much information as possible on 5 generations of your family. Don’t worry, most people have trouble gathering much past the 3rd generation, bring what you have. From there we will build a family tree and begin Ancestor searches.  Once you know where in your family line the Metis history lies, you can begin the process of applying for Metis Citizenship.
