Family Preservation

The Family Preservation Program promotes the safety and well-being of Metis children and families. The preservation worker advocates on behalf of families to support and connect them with appropriate services. Support is also provided during the family court process and at meetings with other professionals in the community.

What to Expect

The Family Preservation worker encourages participation in healing, skill development and provides support to families affected by the Ministry of Children and Family Development;

  • Ensures family visits are occurring regularly either supervised, in community, at MCFD office or at home
  • Attend MCFD meetings alongside Metis family members
  • Attend and advocate for families during mediations
  • General support when families are required to attend Family Court
  • Support families while they are in Trial Court
  • Attend MCFD beside families while their Social Worker creates a Family Plan
  • Attend family case planning conferences
  • Attend family group conferences
  • Attend family decision making circles
  • Support children and families at the Child Advocacy Centre
  • Facilitate Circles
  • Assist women to protective shelters when needed

Opportunities include:

  • Women’s Sharing Circle (every 3rd Thursday)
  • Assistance in navigating systems
  • Follow up support
  • Advocacy and support for meetings with MCFD
  • Culture Night – invite only

How to access services?

Referrals can be made by a parent or guardian, family doctor, community workers and agencies, school staff, and correctional facilities.
